Old-house borers prefer seasoned softwoods, and
particularly pine. Only the larvae feed on the wood.
Larvae take two or three or more years to mature,
depending on the moisture content of the wood.
Larvae usually mature in the spring, and the
mature adults then cut oval holes 6–10 mm (¼ to
3/8 in) in diameter to exit the wood. They can be
recognized by ripples on the surfaces of the
galleries.
Adults are most active in the summer. They are
black or brown with grayish "hair" on their upper
bodies and wing cases and have shiny spots that
resemble eyes.
The old house borer spends 2 to 10 years of its life
cycle in the larval stage. This WDI occurs
primarily in houses less than 10 years old. The
frass produced by the larvae consists of somewhat
granular, barrel-shaped pellets . Irregularly
shaped particles, which are excavated but not
consumed are also mixed in with the granular
material. The larvae generally tunnel with the
grain of the wood and large galleries ma be
produced in sections of wood favorable for larval
developments.
Rasping or scraping sounds made by the
mandibles of medium or large sized larvae feeding
on wood can be heard from a distance of several
feet.
