Yellow Jacket Identification and Removal
Appearance
Yellow jackets can be identified by their yellow
and black markings, however, there are many
varieties of color.  They are smaller than hornets
and can be compared to the size of a housefly.
Their sting is extremely painful.  Yellow jackets are
able to sting multiple times.

Nests
Yellow Jackets nest are commonly found
below-ground and can range anywhere from 75 to
3,000 workers per nest.  Below-ground nests can
cause great damage to lawn.  Above-ground nests
are rare, but can found constructed in or around
trees and shrubs. They may also sometimes be
found in attics.

Treatment
Yellow Jacket nests will be individually treated.
An appropriate insecticide is applied directly into
the nest. The nest will then be removed to ensure
complete elimination.
The carbon dioxide you exhale alerts insects to your presence. If you are regarded as a
threat or if you smash an individual, a chemical danger signal will be emitted. Any
other members of the colony close enough to pick up this signal, will join in an attack
against the intruder - you. Obviously, this could be a very painful situation. It is also
possible to have and allergic reaction to the venom. Too many stings can be a danger
to anyone. Some Wasps attack an intruder's face or spray venom at the eyes, which
can cause blindness. Normal localized swelling can even be life-threatening when the
victim is stung near the throat.

Problems with Insecticides:
Pesticides can be dangerous when sprayed liberally or in poorly ventilated areas. They
should not be inhaled in large quantities or for an extended period of time. They are
also potentially flammable under certain conditions. Today's homes are well insulated
and may have central climate control systems that restrict fresh air exchange.
Filtration units do not intercept poisonous dusts used for indoor insect control.
Homeowners should be conscious of the residual affects of chemicals used within the
home. Wasp and Hornet spray is especially dangerous. The pressurizing component is
propane, a highly flammable gas that has caused house fires. The only way to safely
remove and eliminate stinging insect nests is to "Always Hire A Professional".

Warning: Nest Removal Should Never Be Attempted Without Proper Training!
humans as they are not scavengers but predators.  They will feed strictly on insects and have smaller
colonies consisting of 75-350 workers.  The Vespula/Paravesula vulgarise group however, is a
scavenger.  Like wasps, these stinging insects can be found buzzing around intruding on our outside
activities looking for food.  The nests of this group is larger containing 1,000 to 3,000 workers. Both
groups can cause severe damage to lawns and landscape as well as become a nuisance with the
potential to sting.
